Obituary

Margaret Butikofer passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 24, 2021 at EIRMC in Idaho Falls. This was devastating news that our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother would be going home. Margaret was a cherished soul with a big heart and quick wit, never failing to provide hilarious and eye raising banter to those who had the enjoyment of hearing. She had an unwavering humor and brutal comebacks that would keep the greatest of comedians in check. She used her humor in any and every situation with her wild intelligence; it was a dangerous combo. She was hilarious, Her Scottish brogue indeed added to this comedy.
Margaret always stood up for the underdog and those who were treated unfairly. She was loyal, generous and cared deeply and unwaveringly to those she loved. She was beyond an amazing women.
Margeret was born on June 25, 1952 in Greenock, Scotland to James and Margaret (Miller) Orr. She was a medic in Her Majesty’s Royal British Army before coming to America. It was not without struggle or hardship, however Margaret was strong enough to overcome any disappointments that came her way. She worked as a Nurses Aide for many years. She raised two difficult yet doting daughters, Nicola and Kate. As a single mom she went to nursing school, receiving her certification as a LPN and graduating atop of her class. Her skills were quickly noted and she was given the opportunity to start an Alzheimer’s Unit in a skilled nursing facility and worked there caring for her “extended loved ones” for her entire career until she finally decided to try her hand at retirement.
Margaret was a world traveler, traveling was her favorite hobby. She had a keen sense of style, always dressing well and was also a phenomenal interior decorator. She enjoyed sitting on her back porch in the morning having a “cuppa” with visiting family.
She had six grandchildren; Heather, Lindsey, Conner, Cole, Paisley and Garret, and three great grandchildren; Adilynn, Aydnn and Kynlee, all whom she deeply loved. Margaret always missed Scotland and her loved ones there, visiting as often as she could. She greatly enjoyed seeing her sister and “the girls”, Margaret, Frances Anne and Joanne. They were always a bright light in her life. Even though she worked amazingly hard and built a beautiful life for her family in America, she always missed Scotland and her loved ones there. For her American family we are not quite sure how we will manage without her, but take great solace that she is now with many family members that she missed so greatly and held so dear.
There was no one like Mom, there never will be again. We love and will miss her beyond compare. Thank you for your unselfish sacrifices and your deep unwavering love. You will be so dearly missed. Fly high Mom.

I had the privilege of working with Margaret at Good Samaritan Nursing home from 1996-1997 in the alzheimers unit. Her sense of humor was so funny. At times it was hard to understand her with her accent. I so enjoyed my time with her. She is a special woman. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm going to miss my Aunty Margaret so so much, as are my two sisters. She was a huge part of our lives along with our two wee cousins Nicola and Kate and though we can't physically be with them now we hold them in our hearts and will always be there for them just as they were there for us.
My aunty Margaret was as we say in Scotland "some woman to be the one woman", she overflowed with confidence personality and attitude. I remember going shopping with her one day, duvets were cheaper here than in Idaho so she bought a couple to take back, now she just needed something to carry them in. There we were, me, her and a shop assistant, kneeling on the floor in the middle of Woolworths, surrounded by bags and suitcases of all shapes and sizes trying to stuff duvets into them till we found one that fit, she even had the assistant sit on the case to make sure it closed. I was mortified but that was Aunty Margaret she did what needed to be done and she made sure it was done properly.
We loved when she could get home for a visit, there was always lots of laughter and never a dull moment when she was here, she kept you on your toes especially my poor mum lol. she loved teasing and winding up her big sister just like all little sisters do and even though it was so much more peaceful when she went back to Idaho lol we all missed her, especially mum.
Sleep tight aunty Margaret, I have and always will love you, you will always be missed but I know your safe and happy with your mum, dad and big sister.
My love always and forever Xxx
Margaret x

I am so sorry to hear of Margarets passing. We had a lot of good memories. worked together for many years and often spoke on phone. She and I were like two peas in a pod,she spoke her mind and hopefully you didnt offend anyone. I loved her stories of Scotland and the last time she went she brought me a littlekeychain with scotland banner on little bear chest. We talked about her sisters death which happened around the time of my daughters death. I will miss listening to her talking to me,I loved her scottish accent. i will sure miss her. So sorry to Nicci an Kate, prayers to your family
